Wood Flooring Looks Exquisite

Wood flooring is long lasting and practical and can actually improve with age. It is also easy to clean and warm to the touch, making it an ideal choice for your home. Its timeless appearance will blend seamlessly with any changes in décor, with the added advantage that your floor can be sanded and re-sealed to restore its natural beauty.

The main types of floors available are:

  1. Solid wood – usually a single plank of hardwood
  2. Engineered – a core of hardwood with a solid wood surface
  3. Laminate – a multi-layer synthetic product with a photographic top layer which mimics real wood.

A wide selection of samples are available for you to select from in different thicknesses and colours, with Oak, Walnut, Pine, Maple and Beech being the most common and popular species of wood available. A range of door trims, skirting’s and mouldings in colours to match your floor will enhance the finished installation.

All aspects of the installation will be discussed with the home owner during the survey stage. Inspection of the sub-floor is important as preparation may be required before your floor is laid, this could involve laying plywood or a self-levelling compound. Prior to fitting wooden flooring, it must be delivered to your home at least 48 hours before the installation date. Wood flooring can absorb moisture from the atmosphere, making it expand and later contract, so it is important that it has properly acclimatised to the area where it will be laid.

Most floors in domestic properties are laid as floating floors, in other words, it is not fixed to the sub-floor but simply fixed together via tongue and groove joints in the planks. An expansion gap must be left around the entire perimeter of the room to allow for any movement. This gap will be covered by a skirting board or scotia moulding.

Wood flooring is largely maintenance free. Simply vacuum daily and dry mop to keep the dust down. As most floors arrive from the manufacturers with a sealed finish, it is not necessary to apply any additional sealers, although there is the option to sand and re-seal at a later date. An effective barrier mat at your front door will help prevent stones being walked into the house and damaging the surface of the wood. It is also recommend that felt pads are fitted under the feet of your furniture.
